Many of you may have seen a video doing the rounds on social media in which an 8-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted at a Center Parcs Resort Swimming Pool but rather than the alleged perpetrator being arrested, Bedfordshire Police instead chose to arrest the father of the victim taking him away in handcuffs.
On March 4th Ex Police Detective Jon Wedger released a video on Youtube giving his professional opinion on the conduct of Bedfordshire Police.
Mr Wedger states:-
“This is a message regarding the recent events involving Mr Tommy Robinson. I do my own thing, I am not part of a group, I don’t get associated with politics. I don’t involve myself with the muslim, non-muslim thing, yes the grooming gangs are a menace, a scourge upon society, but they weren’t my reality, I dealt with stuff (child abuse) in London and they weren’t a reality in London – and a lot of child abuse goes on within the home.
However, grooming is grooming so whoever takes the lead on grooming gangs good on them I am behind them all the way.
The video was going viral but I understand has now been removed.
I want to reach out to him and say you have been badly, badly wronged. The video shows him interviewing his daughter, you can hear his daughter in the background she is giving what we used to call a free flowing narrative. There is no indication of any coaching or leading, his questioning was of a very open question stance which is good and really on the whole cannot be criticised too much by a Court and he has got a recorded first account – he has done the right thing.
I am qualified to speak in this manner because I dealt with it for many years, I used to teach child abuse investigations and interviewing, not only on a local level but also a national and international level – I have also taught various police forces across the Commonwealth and the world.
The child discloses a sexual assault on a child, which is an arrestable offence and could be borderline serious sexual offence.
From what we can deduce from this there were 3 men in a children’s paddling area and the father has this recorded first account which seems an open and honest non leading and free flowing narrative (as I have stated previously) and he has gone and accosted this guy and detained him under the “any person powers of Section 24 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act”. He has done the right and just thing.
In the malaise of it all this bloke, (the alleged paedophile) has got a bit of a spanking hey ho these things happen – now Bedfordshire Police have turned up, I don’t know what has gone on with these 3 guys but they have arrested the father of the alleged victim for common assault. Now common assault is a non arrestable offence as was although the parameters have changed, he could easily have been summonsed, they know where he lives, they have had dealings with him in the past, there was no need to arrest him. If they were, as they were stating, interested in a continuation of the offence – then that is to prevent a breach of the peace.
To prevent a breach of the peace they have to remove one of the parties – why not remove the 3 men who appear to be in cahoots with each other for a sexual offence against a young child, there may well be a conspiracy to commit serious sexual offences and they could have been arrested on suspicion of that – that arrest would then have led to the power to search, seize and detain. They could have gone around there arrested the 3 guys seized their recording devices put evidence of a further commission of the offence on there, maybe a pre-planning on there. Carried out a thorough search of where they were staying and that could also have led to property that is under their control i.e at their home addresses under Section 18.1 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act.
So these 3 guys could have been arrested, given over to a CID team and they could have gone to town with what looks like a group of paedophiles that have winkled their way into a children’s play area (which is what they do).
Like I have said before they have picked low hanging fruit, Tommy Robinson being the low hanging fruit and gone and nicked him. I think he has been seriously wronged and I think shame on Bedfordshire Police, they have acted maybe unlawfully. I think they have acted within their parameters but they have done it the wrong way.
One of the guys had made an admission of the offence, he has made an admission at the scene, ok it was an unsolicited comment but it was a recorded unsolicited comment as Tommy had made a record of it – so they have the evidence in a nutshell, it is all there.
I am going to pen a letter to the Police & Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire expressing my concerns over this because this is an outrage.
The reason this has invoked me to come forward and speak out is because this is indicative of the gravity and weight they put on to child abuse claims, they absolutely don’t give a toss, they would rather go and glory hunt by turning round and saying they have booked Tommy Robinson, that is how it appears to me. There was no need whatsoever to have arrested him, if he has assaulted a guy, he is a grown man he will have to deal with that but that could have been dealt with that via a summons.
There was absolutely no need to arrest, detain and take him to a police station, none whatsoever, there would have been no evidential worth in that and it would have frustrated the investigation where the 3 suspected paedophiles at the scene could have been nicked the efforts could have be put into dealing with them and a further more in depth inquiry could have taken place.
I am absolutely disgusted and pass on my concerns to the guy (Tommy Robinson) this is wrong and needs to go to the Policing Ombudsman so they can adjudicate this properly”
Analysis
It is my opinion that the actions of Bedfordshire Police were fundamentally flawed, not only were the correct processes not followed (assuming Jon Wedger’s testimony is correct, which I have no reason to doubt), but they showed scant regard to the mental wellbeing of the young victim.
It is clear that we do not yet know the complete story, but what is beyond doubt is that an admission was made at the scene to a child sexual assault and questions to be answered why 3 men were hanging around the children’s end of a swimming pool.
At the very least I would have expected the alleged perpetrator would have been put under caution, had his phone confiscated and been taken to the Police Station for further questioning – this seems to me to be a serious dereliction of duty.
Just what signal does this send to his 8 year old daughter – a double whammy of trauma added to trauma – telling her dad the truth led to his arrest.
My heart goes out to her and to Bedfordshire Police – I SAY SHAME ON YOU!
