The Labour Councillor and Labour’s opposition leader on Stoke-on-Trent council has been reported to Staffordshire Police. Mohammed Pervez has also resigned his council seat and as Labour’s leader on the council following a complaint about him which amounts to an ‘alleged criminal offence’.
Reports of the police allegations have emerged following Mr Pervez’s shock announcement on Monday morning that he has quit as Labour’s opposition leader on Stoke-on-Trent City Council and as a councillor after 14 years.
A Staffordshire Police spokesperson has said, “Staffordshire Police have received a report of an alleged criminal offence which the force is in the early stages of investigating.” It is now likely that voters in Mr Pervez’s former Moorcroft ward will now be without an elected representative for a year because coronavirus restrictions mean no by-elections can be held until at least May 6, 2021.
Significant talk on social media has been swirling as a result of this story. One profile on Twitter said, “Is anyone keeping count on how many Labour Councillors are losing their jobs”. Another Twitter user: @joerichlaw has also pointed out that these developments “leaves his Party three Councillors down. At least two of his (now former) colleagues are still stuck in Pakistan”.
