The Labour MP for Coventry South, Zarah Sultana has claimed that the Prime Minister’s past comments about Islam have directly lead to Muslims feeling less safe in the United Kingdom.
Her comments follow after the PM shared his condolences for all those affected after someone allegedly attending the mosque for prayers stabbed a 70-year-old man in a vicious attack during Islamic prayers.
Mr Johnson wrote on Twitter : “I’m deeply saddened to hear of the attack at the London Central Mosque. It’s so awful that this should happen, especially in a place of worship. My thoughts are with the victim and all those affected.”
Responding to the Prime Minister Tweet before sending her own condolences to those affected Zarah Sultana wrote: “After Boris Johnson compared Muslim women to “letterboxes” and “bank robbers”, Islamophobic incidents rose by 375%. His racism has directly contributed to Muslims being less safe.”

The Labour MP was then called out on her own thread by people who pointed out that in the article she referenced in her comment, the PM was in fact writing about his support for Muslim women to wear a face coving veil such as a burqa or hijab.
Mr Johnson wrote in the article in question saying: “Denmark has got it wrong. Yes, the burka is oppressive and ridiculous – but that’s still no reason to ban it.”
A Twitter user named Dean Ivy responded to the Labour MP saying: “Not exactly true though is it. I’m not defending Mr Johnson, but again the quote is being used out of context. He was in fact defending a women’s right to choose whether or not to wear a burka.”
Another Twitter user named Dr DeQuincey replied saying: “This is completely ludicrous as the article argued in favour of allowing the burka, contra most of rest of Europe (and the classically Islamic Morocco). These rises are usually due to a redefinition of “incidents”. Sadly Islamist violence is the real cause of any bad feeling.”
Taking to social media again, Zarah Sultana wrote on her Twitter page: “I send my love to my Muslim brothers & sisters at London Central Mosque.
“After the rise in Islamophobic attacks in the UK & hours since a gunman fired on shisha bars in Germany, I know Muslim communities are on edge.
“Together, we must combat racist hate with all our strength.”
