Ahead of next month’s local elections in France Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party sits just four percent behind embattled Emmanuel Macron’s En Marche.

In a recent opinion poll, Le Pen was placed at just 10 percent off her rival in a predicted second runoff. The issue that is faced for Le Pen is that left wing voters tend to rally around Macron to defeat her but with recent protests that may not be the case moving forward.
In a wide ranging interview with the Sunday Telegraph Le Pen hit out at the President and criticised his allegiance towards Germany as opposed to the UK.
Calling for closer ties to Great Britain, she also warned France must break the “shackles” of Germany’s domination of the EU.
“Macron chose the wrong ally when he turned systematically and a bit desperately towards Germany.
I believe we must reinvigorate cooperation between France and Great Britain, in a sort of ‘Entente Cordiale’, new season.”
This month, several MPs defected from Mr Macron’s party, piling the pressure on the President.
Macron’s approval rating currently sits at 37% and the Yellow Vest protests are ongoing over taxes on everyday people. Likewise he is trying to streamline the French Pension system and this has seen widespread protest from many public workers such as Firefighters.
