The Labour leadership contender (yes the contest is still going on) Lisa Nandy has said that the UK should extend the Brexit transition period beyond the end of this year because of the “uncertainties” of Brexit and the destructive impact on the economy due to the coronavirus. The Labour MP for Wigan and Remainer has recently been attempting to project an air of Brexit Acceptance which includes ruling out, should she become party leader, to campaign to re-join the EU. However, Ms Nandy now seems intent on delaying the UK’s exit from the EU.
Ms Nandy has written a piece for The Guardian which is titled “With Coronavirus, the Government Must Extend the Brexit Transition Period,”. The reason Ms Nandy gave for this was that British businesses will not be able to “cope with more uncertainty” after leaving the EU’s institutions. This lady could be the leader of the Labour party in a months’ time.
Ms Nandy’s comments leave little need for reading between the lines: “we must agree with the EU to extend the Brexit transition period”. British companies who trade with the EU do not know what terms they’ll be trading on in 10 months’ time. Add to this the falling demand and disruption created by the coronavirus and it is reasonable to expect many businesses will not survive”. She also demanded that the extension “must happen now
Whilst according to the polls Ms Nandy is currently third in the race she has showcased her progressive credentials when she said that by convicted male criminals who identify as women should be allowed to be housed in women’s prisons, and signed a pledge that “transphobes” should be expelled from the Labour Party. This is the standard of the leader at the top of the Labour party.
