Not one of the 1,100 migrants who have arrived in Britain from the English channel illegally over the last seven weeks have been deported, this is in spite of persistent assurances given by the Home Secretary Priti Patel.
The Home Secretary has consistently given her word that she would eradicate these crossings and return those who enter the country. However, UNN’S Oliver Down has learnt that only 155 of nearly 4,000 migrants have been sent back from Britain since January 2019.
Those numbers were released at the start of May. However, the Home Office has conceded to the Daily Mail that that number of those deported remains the same today, which means that none of the 1,138 who have landed in small boats in the last month-and-a-half have been returned.
A spokeswoman for the Home Office has said added: “Senior UK and French officials met this month as part of their ongoing cooperation to address illegal migration. Both countries are absolutely committed to tackling this issue and going after the people smugglers behind it. Last month, the Home Secretary spoke to her French counterpart, Interior Minister Christophe Castaner, who reaffirmed the commitment to carry out more returns at sea to stop these illegal crossings”.
The Home Office also added that the Secretary of state Priti Patel has had a telephone call with Mr Castaner last month and that they “discussed and agreed a number of proposals to tackle the crossings” and that these plans included “returning migrant boats at sea back to France when possible” as well as an “increased deployment of forces on the French coast”.
