London & the South East – General Election special #2

Oliver Down’s general election special part 2 focuses on London and the South East. This area is likely being eyed up as ripe ground by the remain parties. However, the UK is in turbulent times so anything is possible. If Labour is to perform well in this general election they will need to hold on to their grip of London in particular. However, only yesterday polls in London appeared to show a surge towards the Liberal Democrats. This is likely as a result of Labour’s unclear Brexit policy. 

A key constituency could be the constituency of Cities of London and Westminster. It is currently Conservative-held despite only 24.7% voting leave. The small majority of just over 3,000 and the Brexit demographic means this will undoubtedly be a Lid Dem and Labour target seat. The incumbent MP has stood down and the 3 major parties are fielding candidates, with the Brexit party standing down. Chuka Umunna is standing for the Liberal Democrats and it is conceivable to see him gaining significant traction in this constituency. 

A further key constituency will be Southampton Itchin. It is also Conservative-held seat with a majority of only 31. A key factor in this constituency is likely to be the Brexit party standing down. This undoubtedly makes the Conservative task to keep hold of this seat a lot easier. The incumbent MP has repeatedly voted for Brexit in parliament and in a Brexit voting seat, this could also be a considerable factor. 

The third constituency of interest could be the Prime Minister’s seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip. Boris Johnson only holds a majority of 5,034. Whilst it is extremely unlikely Mr Johnson will be defeated the result in this constituency could be an interesting barometer of how the election is going. Given that Mr Johnson’s constituency voted to leave Mr Johnson will be looking to deliver himself a stonking majority in his constituency to mirror his hopes for a similarity large nationwide majority.
