The retailer Marks & Spencer has received considerable criticism for selling globes that have renamed the Falkland Islands, replacing the British term with its Argentinian name.
Critics have said that this is a snub to British troops. One critic stated that this was “a slap in the face” to the 255 British troops who died in the Falklands conflict of 1982 in and around the South Atlantic islands.
The M&S globes call the British territory as the ‘Islas Malvinas’ and follow this with ‘Falkland Islands’ in brackets. In Addison to this it says that the capital is ‘Puerto Argentino’ with Stanley in brackets. The globe also says that the territory is ‘claimed by Arg and UK’.
One Falklands veteran Simon Weston who is 58 has said that M&S selling the globe was ‘crass stupidity’. He went on to say ‘If you’re going to provide an educational tool then it has to be factually correct.
‘How can you educate when the globe is wrong and it is being sold in British stores which means British youngsters get the wrong information?’
Andrew Magowan, who is a retired police officer described the selling of these globes as a ‘slap in the face to the brave service personnel’.
M&S have said that they will review the product. A spokesperson said: ‘This is a decorative item. However, we take all customer feedback on board and we will review the product’.
