It has emerged that a journalist from the BBC has come under fire after a tweet was unearthed where she said ‘#HitlerWasRight’ in relation to Israel. UNN’s Oliver Down understands that an investigation is now underway as a result of the seven years old tweet being discovered.
Tala Halawa who works as a Palestine Specialist for BBC Monitoring, said in her tweet that ‘Israel is more Nazi than Hitler’ as well as telling the Israeli Defence Force to ‘go to hell’ in an online post in 2014. These tweets came prior to her being hired as a digital reporter at the BBC.
A screenshot of the historic tweet was uploaded by the “Honest Reporting”. The screengrab then went viral across social media. The Honest Reporting account posted the tweet with the comment: ‘Halawa directly influences and creates news content watched by many millions around the world. In what world can someone like this work for a professional news outlet?’
A Spokesperson for the BBC has said: ‘These tweets predate the individual’s employment with the BBC but we are nevertheless taking this very seriously and are investigating’. Halawa had been a covering the recent conflict in Gaza and had done a piece to camera in a video covering Bella Hadid’s stance on the conflict in the region.
Halawa had also previously tweeted: ‘ur media is produced by ur zionist government in order 2 produce ignorant people’, ‘#Zionists can’t get enough of our blood’ and ‘they’re are crying the holocaust every single moment but they’re practicing it every single moment as well’. UNN’s Oliver Down has approached Tala Halawa for comment but has been unable to obtain comment from Ms Halawa.
