Man charged with murder of 88-year-old who was found dead in quiet UK village

A man has been charged with the murder of an 88-year-old widower who was sadly found dead in his bungalow in a quiet Surrey village.

Darren McClean, age 41, stands accused of killing Dennis Kellond, whose body was discovered at an address on Bletchingley Road in Godstone, just before 11am on Monday.

McClean, of Drivers Mead in nearby Lingfield, was arrested on Thursday, before being charged on Friday, Surrey Police said.

Mr Kellond died of a head injury, he had lived alone since the passing of his wife, he was described as an ‘absolute legend’ from those the local area.

Rev Peter O’Connell, from St Nicholas Church, said: “You sort of expect that if absolutely terrible things happen in the world, then it’s not going to be anything here and especially not to someone who is 88 and no threat to anyone.”

Friends Helen Bailey Johnson and Gael Bozec wrote: “He was an absolute legend and we had many a great evening playing the game with friends.”

Mr Kellond was a huge fan of the ball game petanque, and a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to name a pitch in honour of his memory.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Colin Pirie said: “Mr Kellond’s family is going through an extremely difficult time and we would ask that their privacy is respected to allow them to grieve and begin to come to terms with what has happened.”
