A man has been sent to prison for two years after pushing a police officer down a flight of stairs during a day of protest in London on the 13th of June. Yesterday (Tuesday the 18th of August) Jamie Dewing who is 31 was sentenced to two years in prison at Teesside Crown Court.
Mr Dewing had previously appeared at Teesside Magistrates Court on Thursday the 8th of July where he plead guilty to one charge of assaulting an emergency service worker and one of violent disorder. Following that appearance, Dewing was remanded in custody to await sentencing.
On June 13, Dewing travelled down to the parliament square as part of a demonstration to protect the statues in and around Central London. However, Dewing was part of a very small minority of demonstrators who were involved in an incident with the police officers present.
The court heard how officers had made their way into the crowd as part of an attempt to retrieve a woman from a Black Lives Matter protest. Mr Dewing admitted violently pushing a female police officer as she was leading the women away whom she had retrieved.
DC Nicky Dixon who was part of the investigation team said following the sentence: “Dewing assaulted an officer who was only trying to protect a member of the public. This officer braved a hostile crowd to carry out the rescue of someone who was vulnerable. Having come to the woman’s aid, the officer was moving away when Dewing assaulted her. There is no excuse for this or his later actions, it was just thuggery”.
