A man who stabbed a police officer in the chest has been jailed.
Mohin Hussain, 41 [25.8.79] of Ashmore Road, W9, appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, 29 January where he was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for Section 20 wounding and six months imprisonment for being in possession of a bladed article – sentences to be served consecutively.
At 23:49hrs on Tuesday, 28 July, officers were conducting mobile patrols at Shirland Road, W9 when Hussain was observed with his hand in a satchel that he was wearing across his body.
Police described how ‘from inside the vehicle, officers engaged in conversation with Hussain, throughout which Hussain continued to have his hand inside the satchel. Due to the answers being provided to the questions, as well as Hussain’s odd behaviour, one of the officers opened the door to initiate a search.
‘As he did so, Hussain pushed the car door against him and at this point removed his hand from the bag and punched the officers in the upper right of his chest before fleeing the scene.’
Following a short foot chase, he was detained when officers red-dotted him with a taser. The taser was not fired, It was at this point that the officer, aged in his 30’s, who was punched, realised that he had in fact been stabbed by Hussain with a Stanley knife.
The officer was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service for treatment to a stab wound that was assessed as non life-threatening.
Hussain was arrested at the scene and taken to a west London police station where, in an interview, he answered ‘no comment’ to all questions put to him.
Detective Constable Nigel Pacquette, investigating, said: “Officers often deal with incidents that most people would run from, and even though they wear protective equipment, they still risk serious injury.
“They place their own safety behind that of the communities they protect, but when their duty is over, they must be able to return home, to their own families, without having suffered injury.”
