Manchester Terror suspect now being detained under ‘Mental Health Act’

A knifeman who stabbed five people at the Arndale Centre on Friday morning was arrested on suspicion of terrorism but is now being detained under the Mental Health Act. Police were called to the scene at 11.15am to reports of a stabbing. The 40-year-old suspect was detained and five people were injured.

Witnesses described a scene of terror as shoppers, some with injuries, sought refuge in stores and panic spread around the centre.

Officers from Counter Terrorism Police North West were called in to investigate, and at around 3.15pm, Greater Manchester Police Assistant Chief Constable Russ Jackson said the suspect had been arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation and instigation of an act of terrorism.

He added that investigators did not believe anyone else to be involved in the attack. Then, later, police confirmed the suspect had been detained under the Mental Health Act.

A spokesperson for GMP Police said:

Enquiries are continuing in relation to the attack at the Arndale Shopping Centre earlier today.

The 40-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of committing a terrorism offence, has now been assessed by specialist doctors and compulsorily detained under the Mental Health Act.

The investigation will continue in order to fully understand the motives behind the attack.

There is not believed to be any wider threat to the communities of Greater Manchester and the attacker is believed to have acted alone.
