For years, news that a catastrophic environmental crisis is on its way has been nonstop in the MSM. This has left the world today uncertain about what a real global crisis looks like. Well, it is safe to say that now we know. The coronavirus crisis has turned so many peoples lives upside down in a number of ways. As a society, lessons need to be learnt from how we manage it. Having the right attitude to risk is the key.
In an all too expected development, some environmentalists are applying ‘coronavision’ to the climate change debate. Some green activists seem to be welcoming the virus, seeing it as a sort of divine punishment for a civilisation that has lost its way. There is certainly precedence in human history for people viewing plagues and other natural disasters in much the same way.
That certainly appears to have been happening with the coronavirus – with the government after government throwing everything at stopping the spread, however much damage is done to the global economy. And where the virus is concerned – this may well prove to be the correct response.
This lockdown period to many has made the ‘net zero’ target hugely unpalatable. Net-zero will undoubtedly cripple our economy in the pursuit of steep emissions reductions, all in the expectation that developing countries will do the same. Many of the eco-fundamentalists are not actually invested in developing a rational response to climate change because they are far more interested in spreading fear. For them, COVID-19 is but a minor precursor to ‘catastrophic climate breakdown’, albeit one that might allow for a necessary societal transformation.
Make no mistake, environmental activists will seek to exploit the fear and political instability of this crisis to try and extend the precautionary principle indefinitely. It would be doubly tragic if this pandemic is also the harbinger of the Big Green State. This period of authoritarian rule, albeit on the whole necessary, must make us cherish and look after our freedoms all the more.
