Devon’s roads this week are set to see huge disruption taking place owing to a ‘sponsorship drive in aid of democracy.’ This comes on the back of a series of trucker and van go slows on the motorways and also the blockade of Pembroke ferry terminal.
According to the local newspaper Devon Live:
Those involved say the drive will see tractors, lorries and cars drive along some of the county’s major routes on the day Britain was due to leave the European Union.
So far, five tractors, all with trailers, a vintage lorry and 20 cars have apparently agreed to take part in the drive, which will see them travel on the North Devon Link Road and the A30.
People have also been encouraged to walk behind the vehicles for half a mile when it reaches their town.
The drive is similar to last week’s ‘go slow’ protest in Exeter, which saw a dozen vehicles leave the services at Sandygate roundabout.
This time, vehicles will meet at the M5 services on junction 27 at 11am on Friday, in what has been described as ‘raising awareness for democracy.’
One of those taking part told journalists: “Everybody would appreciate this more than a go slow. Of course I’m concerned with police, but what can they do about a sponsorship drive?
People can walk behind us too. Wherever we go, if it’s Barnstaple, walk with us for half a mile then go home. We want to raise awareness and collect sympathy for democracy. It’s on its last legs and in intensive care.
Everybody is welcome, who cares about democracy. Join us on the way walk just a few yards behind us. Anything is appreciated.”
