Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are ‘set to launch a set of awards that will rival the honours list’

Reports are suggesting that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are imminently set to launch a set of awards that will rival the Queen’s honours list. UNN’s Oliver Down understands that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will award individuals, charities and companies they feel champion their favourable causes.

The awards will run separately to the Queen’s own awards – which include Knighthoods, CBEs, OBEs and MBEs. Court documents have revealed that those fields likely to receive awards are: ‘Charitable service, education, science, literature, racial justice, gender equity, environmental stewardship, youth empowerment, health and mental health’.

Harry and Meghan’s awards are likely to be different because the Queen’s awards are decided by honours committees made up of senior civil servants and people independent of the Government. According to the UK Government’s website, the Queen’s awards are for ‘major contribution to the arts, science, medicine, or government lasting over a long period of time’. Knighthoods or Damehoods are given to those who have made a ‘major contribution in any activity’.

However, Harry and Meghan’s awards scheme will be run by their Archewell foundation, which they first tried to trademark back in March. However, at that time lawyers decided the application was unclear and lacked a signature and they were given six months to send another application through.

However, a second set of forms was filed last week, and they are now under review. UNN’s Oliver Down will keep you up to date with developments.
