Meghan Markle criticises the ‘toxicity’ that she and Prince Harry have faced in the media

In a newly released video interview, the Duchess of Sussex criticised what she describes as ‘salacious’ journalism as well as stressing the importance of reporting through a ‘compassionate and empathetic lens’. She also spoke out about what she and Prince Harry describe as the ‘toxicity’ in the ‘economy for attention.’

Meghan Markle spoke at an event for The 19th* Represents 2020 Virtual Summit. During this interview, Mrs Markle offered her opinions on the current state of journalism. She says that her ‘personal experience in the past couple years’ has changed her view on the media in a negative way.

Meghan discussed how much influence that media can have in shifting the public debate. She also claims that that influence can often come from a single person or a single place. She said : ‘What’s so fascinating, at least from my standpoint and my personal experience in the past couple years, is the headline alone, the clickbait alone, makes an imprint. That is part of how we view the world, how we interact with other people. There is so much toxicity out there in what is being referred to as, my husband and I talk about it often, this to the economy for attention. That is what is monetizable right now’.

This interview has resulted in considerable discussion on social media. The former Brexit party candidate Dawn Westcott has said via Twitter: ‘Who’s going to say it – calmly, quietly and without a hint of ‘racism’? Meghan, it’s your behaviour we actually find quite ‘toxic’. I wish you well in your new mansion but please stop moaning. There are people out there will real struggles to deal with’.
