Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex looks set to follow in the steps of Diana Princess of Wales when she will appear in the British Vogue magazine. Whilst the Duchess of Cambridge has also been in Vogue, the Duchess of Sussex will become the first person to guest edit the prestigious September issue. As well as this Meghan Markle has declined the honour to be on the front cover and has instead decided to focus on ‘female empowerment’ as well as ‘diversity’.
The former Suits star has also taken the decision to make 15 other women cover stars, thus using the opportunity to promote role models who lead the public discourse on everything from mental health, politics and global warming. Teenage climate change activist Greta Thunberg is pictured on the front cover, this is even after being pictured in an Antifa t-shirt, the organisation that Donald Trump is trying to prescribe as a terrorist organisation.
The Duchess has been working on this project since the beginning of 2019. It has been widely reported that the edition is going to include a “candid conversation” with former First Lady Michelle Obama. Following an announcement to their twitter account it has emerged that their will be a significant feature on the charity smart works, for whom Meghan Markle is a patron. Markle has been criticised by President Trump over negative comments she made towards him as well.
The Duchess of Sussex stated when asked about her involvement in the project that “These last seven months have been a rewarding process, curating and collaborating with Edward Enninful, British Vogue’s editor-in-chief, to take the year’s most-read fashion issue and steer its focus to the values, causes and people making impact in the world today.” However, Meghan has come under criticism for her selection of contributors and models as they seem to be exclusively left-wing, and some have questioned how diverse this is.
In addition to this some, such as the Brexit Party MEP Anne Widdecombe has stated that “Royals have not only got to keep out of politics but they have got to be seen to keep out of politics” and as a result of this has broken royal protocol. One of the women selected for the front cover is the Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern, who has openly advocated for a debate on axing the Queen as head of state, as well as actress Jameela Jamil who once mocked the monarch’s breasts.
