It has emerged this morning that the Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove has been pinged via the NHS app to state that he has come into contact with someone who has coronavirus. The senior Conservative party figure has recently returned from Portugal after supporting Chelsea in the Champions League final.
However, instead of self-isolating for 10 days, as per the government recommendations, UNN’s Oliver Down understands that Mr Gove will take daily Covid tests as part of a pilot scheme designed to measure the effectiveness of testing.
Sky News are reporting that a football supporter on the same flight as Mr Gove has also been contacted by the tracing app. However, they will have to isolate until Sunday 6th June which is 10 days after the final took place.
A spokesman for Mr Gove has said: “He has followed Covid-19 regulations and guidance at all times and will continue to do so”. After being alerted, Mr Gove had to leave a meeting that he was attending with Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak in Downing Street.
A spokesperson for Mr Gove also said: “The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster is participating in the daily contact testing programme after being advised to isolate today (Thursday) by NHS Test and Trace. He has followed COVID-19 regulations and guidance at all times and will continue to do so”.
Whilst at the time of the game, Portugal had been on England’s green travel list, yesterday the UK government announced it would be relegating Portugal to the amber list from Tuesday at 4AM. This is a move that has been met with significant criticism.
