Armed police have been deployed to Dijon in eastern France, after violence erupted between rival gangs for a fourth night running.
Cars were torched and wheelie bins set alight late on Monday before several dozen police managed to restore order according to authorities.
The unrest stemmed from “a settling of scores” between ethnic Chechens and local residents of Gresilles, a low-income district with a heavy North African immigrant population, said local prefect Bernard Schmeltz.
A spokesperson for the local Police said: “The events of the last few days in the Gresilles district of Dijon, where there had been gatherings of youths which had led to vehicles and dustbins set on fire, only leads to more insecurity and worries for the local population, following on from the events of the weekend.”
