Monday saw the highest number of people attempting to cross the English Channel in a single day.
It is thought between 800 and 850 people crossed the busy shipping lane, far higher than the previous high of 482 people who crossed the Dover Strait on August 4 on board 21 boats.

While officials led passengers away, one woman was seen clutching a small baby who was strapped to her.

Crossings in 2021 – which already eclipsed last year’s annual total last month – have resumed in recent days following a period of bad weather.
