The British Government has asked China to supply ventilators to the NHS after a number of British companies were rejected for failing to meet the certain specifications needed, Unity News Network (UNN) has learned.
Hundreds of Chinese made ventilators will start arriving in the United Kingdom this week as part of a consignment of 8,000 items being shipped from overseas to help patients infected with coronavirus in the UK.
The news follows after Ventilator Challenge UK, a consortium of British engineering firms including Airbus, Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems, secured an order for 10,000 of two types of machine currently produced by Smiths Medical of Luton and an Oxfordshire-based firm called Penlon.
A reservation for 5,000 machines has also been placed with Smiths, on top of a further order for 10,000 from the vacuum cleaner manufacturer Dyson.
There are currently only 8,000 ventilators in the NHS and HM’s Government have scrambled to source more, since the outbreak of Covid-19.
Michael Gove, Minister for the Cabinet Office has said the Government will roll out ventilators produced by manufacturers in the UK from next week.
A Cabinet source revealed: “Quite a few British companies have been told they don’t meet the spec, so we are now going to be ordering ventilators and other PPE [personal protective equipment] from China. It’s more than ironic that the country where this disease originated is now set to benefit from the havoc it has wreaked on the rest of the world.”
The former Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith slammed the Government’s decision to acquire equipment from the Chinese, he said: “China shouldn’t be charging for this stuff. Why are they making money out of Covid-19 when it started in China? They shouldn’t be deriving any significant benefit at all.”
According to the Telegraph, a source close to the Department for Health admitted that ventilators and PPE had been ordered from China, saying: “We are basically saying that we will take this stuff from wherever we can get it, as quickly as we can get it. We were never just looking at British companies.
“Some UK firms that offered to make ventilators were not able to meet the spec, and we do not want eight or nine different types of machine in the NHS. We need to work with companies that can produce exactly what we want, when we want it.”
A Government spokesman said: “The UK continues to work with domestic organisations and international partners to bolster NHS supplies and save lives. International cooperation is the only way to beat coronavirus, and we will continue to work with countries around the world to tackle this global pandemic.”
