Mothers have taken to social media to voice their concerns over an email received from Asda promoting an education pack they claim is ‘normalising paedophilia and child abuse’.
The Safe Schools Alliance, which works with schools to ensure safeguarding, Tweeted to say they’d been contacted by many concerned parents about the email from George at Asda.
Many parents expressed serious concerns that an exercise included in the Primary School learning pack, created by Diversity Role Model, includes the message ‘love has no age limit’, which they said could be seen to normalise paedophilia.
“We have been contacted by many parents expressing concerns regarding this recent email from @Georgeatasda . @asda are a supermarket, should they be recommending home learning packs? Do they understand child #safeguarding?@AsdaServiceTeam #edutwitter #RSE,” The Safe School Alliance said.
On Mumsnet, an online forum for mothers, one user wrote: “That book is hugely inappropriate and disgusting, trying to normalise overly sexualised behaviour to the reader, so wrong and I would be absolutely shocked and disgusted to find my child of pretty much any age reading those words and taking them on board, what on earth is this?!”
One mum said: “I’m all for LGBTQ rights but suggesting love has no age limit is a very, very bad idea.”
Another said: “The love has no age could be an unfortunate mistake on it’s own I suppose. But that Magenta book is totally inappropriate.”
An Asda spokesperson said: “The home learning packs are produced by our charity partner Diversity Role Models as part of the work they do in schools to encourage young people to challenge stereotypes and embrace diversity.”
A statement from Diversity Role Models said: “Some of the materials in our packs have been viewed in isolation, without the appropriate context and interpreted differently than intended as a result.
“We have amended the packs to remove the example ‘love has no age limit’ in reference to the Love Has No Labels video and the LGBT+ inclusive book list in the secondary pack has also been removed.
“These changes have been made to make sure he content is not open to misinterpretation.”
Brexit Alliance London Assembly Member David Kurten Tweeted his disgusted over the situation saying: “’Education packs’ saying ‘love has no age limit’, and books which discuss performing sex acts at six-years-old should not be promoted nor given to children.”
