The Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage has batted off claims that the United Kingdom could break apart due to Brexit as “absolute nonsense”.
Following the election across the Irish Sea in the Republic of Ireland where the nationalist party Sinn Fein secured a surprisingly large amount of support in apposed to other years, there have been suggestions of a so-called “united Ireland” with the Republic of Ireland and the British Northern Ireland “reunifying”.
However speaking recently on his LBC show, Mr Farage dismissed the idea the United Kingdom could fracture now we have left the European Union speaking to his listeners Mr Farage said: “We’re always told because of Brexit Northern Ireland will leave the United Kingdom and Scotland will leave the United Kingdom.
“In the case of Scotland, I’ve answered that question many, many times.
“I think it’s absolute nonsense.
“But on Northern Ireland, and this is really interesting, quite a big piece of opinion research published by the Belfast Telegraph a couple of days ago asking people whether they supported the concept of a united Ireland.”
Mr Farage continued: “52 per cent said no, and only 29 per cent said yes.
“That’s a very very big majority in that poll to maintain Northern Ireland as part of the UK.
“Even more interesting, I thought, was this: people were asked to identify which community they belonged to, how they felt.
“Only 28 per cent chose unionist, only 25 per cent said nationalist and 40 per cent said neither.”
Mr Farage added: “That’s a really big shift.
“It suggests actually that maintaining the status quo is the popular option.
“And that joining the Republic, leaving the United Kingdom and joining the euro is very much in the minority. Worth keeping that in mind.”
