In the lead up to the Conservative Party Leadership vote, Boris Johnson was clear on his unequivocal ‘do or die’ Brexit message as he was deeply committed to getting the UK out of the European Union by the 31st of October.
However, a Government document exposed in a Scottish Court has shown that his passionate pro-Brexit attitude was no more than a lie.
The ‘Court of Session’ in Scotland has been told that Government documents say the Prime Minister will seek an extension from the EU if no EU Withdrawal Agreement is reached by the 19th of October 2019.
This completely contrasts Johnson’s rhetoric as he has never stopped hammering home the message of ‘Brexit will be delivered by the 31st of October’ since his leadership victory.
When Boris Johnson became Prime Minister the chances of Brexit being delivered drastically increased in the eyes of many Brexiteers and they were glad that they finally had a pro-Brexit Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
However, a very prominent pro-Brexit figure didn’t fully trust Boris to deliver Brexit from the very start and that “Boris Won’t deliver Brexit by the 31st of October”. Nigel Farage had concerns that Boris Johnson was going to “reheat Mrs May’s dreadful withdrawal agreement” and he claims to be correct from the releases of Mr Johnson’s new Brexit deal. Nigel Farage has been proven right that Boris Johnson will not deliver Brexit by the 31st of October if the court documents are true.
What does this mean for Brexit? Well, the Prime Minister has never admitted publically that he will ask the European Union for a Brexit delay. Also a ‘Number 10 Source’ has said to the BBC that “The Government is not prevented by the Act (Benn Act) from doing other things that cause no delay including other communications, private and public”
This indicates that the government may seek to ask an or many EU member-state(s) to veto any extension asked by the Brittish as all 27 member-states must accept the extension for the extension to be legal.
The ‘Number 10 Source’ also went on to say “people will have to wait and see how this is reconciled” and “The Government is making its true position on delay known privately in Europe and this will become public soon”
This insinuates that Number 10 may have a plan to bypass the Benn Act and may not need to seek an extension at all. This would mean if his agreement is rejected by the EU as it is expected to be. Then the UK will leave the European Union on the 31st of October 2019 with No Deal. But there is no way to truly be certain until new information arrives.
