When I declared on these pages last month that: “It’s over folks- IT’S OVER!” I was referring to the pandemic. But, despite Boris Johnson declaring that restrictions would end this month, for thousands of people they will not end. Since I have been completely ignoring the restrictions for most of the pandemic, I am not very sure what exactly we are now free from. Masks and social distancing ended a while back, but I still see people wearing masks and taking detours to get past each other on the pavement. Clearly, these people are not free from the ‘state of fear’ that was generated by the government and the health fascist brigade. Somehow, I doubt they will ever be free, but that is up to them; their restrictions are self-imposed. At least, when I see someone wearing a mask out of doors (frankly, I feel much the same about people wearing them indoors), I know that I can write that person off as someone with whom I would not wish to associate. I am sure that they look at my unmasked face and arrive at the same conclusion.
It is all very well for Boris to lift restrictions but when is the acknowledgement going to come that lockdown was a disaster and that it was introduced on an evidence-free basis? Nothing has had any significant effect and I refer to lockdowns and face masks. It is also apparent that the efficacy of vaccines has been greatly exaggerated, misrepresented even, with accumulating evidence of how lethal they can be for some people, with vast numbers of people suffering unpleasant side effects. Moreover, the dangers from Covid-19 were always grossly exaggerated and the current strain killed a grand total of 10 in one day at the latest count (21 February). That is 0.00001667% of the population. The average daily deaths from all causes at the latest count was 1,591. Using these figures, Covid-19 deaths were 0.62% of the total number of deaths. Yet the government refuses to dismiss the possibility that we will not, when the whim takes it, return to restrictions. At least, I think that is what Boris said when he blethered: “So we protect ourselves without losing our liberties – and maintaining our contingency capabilities so we can respond rapidly to any new variant.”
As for the thousands, for whom restrictions are not over, I am referring to those working in care homes and NHS employees. The remaining restrictions also affect patients and visitors. Despite the government U-turn on vaccinating NHS staff, the syringe of Damocles is still pointing at them. The vaccine mandate for health students has not been lifted on the basis that they need to enter care homes as part of their programme. Most are nursing students, but this also affects medical and allied health professional students, some of whom will have their dreams crushed for not being coerced to take a vaccine they do not need. There is a terrible irony and hypocrisy in maintaining compulsory vaccines for people working in care homes. If ever a stable door was closed after the horse had bolted, this is it. We were prepared to sacrifice thousands of older people through Covid warehousing, isolation and neglect in the early days of the pandemic. Now we are trying to impose an ineffective vaccine on people who do not need it. It also appears, as explained by Dr Steve Jones (the one who confronted Sajid Javid over the vaccine) on talkRADIO this week to Kevin O’Sullivan, while you are not under pressure to be vaccinated if you remain in your job, you will be required to be vaccinated if you change jobs and move from one NHS Trust to another.
Then there is the situation regarding hospital visitors. Despite the fact that hospitals are not overwhelmed and critical care units are not full, many NHS Trusts are considering banning visitors to hospitals and my local NHS Trust—Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust—had a ban in place since last year. This is having a devastating effect on both patients and visitors with some people dying alone. And NHS leaders, along with trades unions and other catastrophists, virtue signalling businesses, modellers and inveterate meddlers, warn that restrictions must be maintained for the rest of the population. Those who run the NHS do not see that the longer they go for the short terms gain of achieving whatever it is they hope to achieve by allowing people to die alone then the more they are building up mistrust in the whole service.
The pandemic may well be over, and we have now been given permission to do what most people were already doing regardless of the pandemic. But until there are no circumstances under which compulsory vaccines are forced on anyone and people are free to visit their sick and dying relatives in hospital the fight continues.
