My youngest son, currently working night shifts, was oblivious to the news from the Department of ‘Health’ and Social Care. Normally a very level-headed young man who never raises his voice, he was incandescent on Friday when I told him what the dishonourable Matt Hancock MP had been up to. Reference was made to Nuremberg style trials which Hancock and his ilk should face for messing up the lives of young people in this country and how they should be jailed. I think he stopped short of suggesting we resurrect Albert Pierrpoint and hang them—as the executionary genius Pierrpoint did—two at a time. But, by God, was I proud of him.
This weekend another person I know, never known to utter a word in anger on Facebook, reporting that he ‘didn’t hug his beautiful granddaughters for 9 months’ also said: ‘Never ever forgive him or them for lost time. Lost time with your loved ones is priceless…the economy is worthless.’ I hope Matt Hancock and the rest of his cronies have at least an inkling of how angry people are. In my view, his apology (because he got caught) and his resignation (because his colleagues told Boris he had to go) are both pathetic and inadequate.
It is reported that he faces investigation by the police for breaking coronavirus restrictions in force at the time of his televised groping. I feel very sorry for Mrs Hancock. Her slimeball of a husband has now left to her to continue sampling his Italian delicacy uninhibited by the inconvenience of being married. Apparently, she had no idea about the affair. Her embarrassment, sorrow and anger are unimaginable, and his three children will have to face their friends. Other than the image it conjures up, from the COVID-19 perspective, I could not care less if Hancock had an orgy with the England women’s football team on the top of his ministerial desk. The restrictions are all ridiculous, unnecessary, and ineffective. The real point here is not only the hypocrisy of imposing restrictions on our lives while flouting them himself. It would not be the first recorded incident of such government level flouting; in fact, it is the third (Ferguson and Cummings preceded him) that we know about, and I am sure more will emerge. It is the effect that the restrictions have had including livelihoods and education ruined; businesses closed; increases in suicides, domestic violence, depression and abortions. Some people who have been confined to quarters for months are now terrified to emerge. This is not merely an apologising and resigning issue, it surely amounts to a crime against humanity.
And more of Hancock’s shady dealings are emerging. It was an open secret that he had been handing out COVID related contracts to his chums. But it is now known that, in contravention of government rules on transparency, he has been using a private email address frequently to correspond with these greedy chums to seal the deals. So, he has broken his own rules on social distancing and is quite possibly corrupt. His Italian takeaway, hired by him to work in his own office, was a long-standing (or perhaps not always standing) girlfriend from university days. This alone quite possibly broke the rules but having sex with a subordinate colleague, undoubtedly hired for the purposes of bureaucratic bonking, definitely merits an investigation. Add all that to the crimes against humanity and I am sure the police could throw the proverbial book at him. My fear is that the book would be too big to lift.
