As the Brexit debacle rumbles on it’s easy to lose sight of what is important. In 2016 17.4m people voted to leave the European Union. A small majority yes, but 52% is still a majority. The following 3 years would bring nothing but turmoil, fear and political games, with many MP’s fighting against the result of the referendum. Accusations of racism and stupidity have caused outrage and have only served to further divide the country.
MP’s who have ignored their constituents and fought tooth and nail to reverse the decision to leave the EU. Their resolve strengthened by the knowledge they will lose their seat in the next general election, they now know they have nothing to lose.
This has led many Brexiteers to brand them traitors, further fuelling the fire that is Brexit. As a result of the actions of these MP’s, the knock on effect has seen hardened remainers join in with what many are calling Project Fear.
With no evidence to substantiate these claims it is easy to see why Brexiteers have become increasingly agitated and fearful of the referendum result not being honoured. It is also easy to see why many remainers are fearful of what the future may hold for them and their children.
The latest alleged Project Fear claim warns of undrinkable water, due to the chemicals used to ensure safe, parasite free water being imported from the other side of the channel. The UK’s water supply was safe to drink before joining the EU and is still way ahead of many other EU countries where even in 2019 have unsafe drinking water.
Due to this basic fact, it must be concluded that the threat of dirty, undrinkable water is nothing more than a scare tactic. Nobody can be definitively certain what the future holds post Brexit, but one thing is certain, the underhand tactics, games and smearing have caused a complete lack of trust in the political system.
Lies were, are still are told by both sides of the argument, and the UK has never been more divided. As the old saying goes, “you’ve made your bed, now lay in it”, 17.4m voters decided they wanted to make that bed, they should, and must (for the sake of democracy) be allowed the right to lay in it.
