Over 100 doctors are urging the UK government to end the “psychological torture” of Julian Assange

Julian Assange faces his extradition hearing to the US next week. Prior to this, Over 100 doctors are urging the UK government to put an end to the “psychological torture” of Julian Assange and send him to a hospital immediately. It’s their fourth letter to be sent since the journalist appeared in court. The letter says that the WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange may die in a UK prison having “effectively been tortured to death,”. This claim is made by the Doctors for Assange group of 117 doctors from 18 countries. This letter was published in The Lancet, a leading medical journal.

The letter says that Assange requires urgent medical assistance and has been exposed to “prolonged psychological torture”. However, the WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Kristinn Hrafnsson, on the other hand, has claimed that Assange’s health is improving, and he is no longer being held in solitary confinement. Mr. Assange’s health has been a concern for many for a while now. These concerns were fuelled by Nils Melzer, the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture who visited Mr. Assange in prison in May 2019, and reported that Mr. Assange was showing “all the symptoms typical of prolonged exposure to psychological torture”.

Wikileaks’ Julian Assange removed from Ecuador embassy by British authorities

The extradition hearing held next week will decide whether the US can extradite Assange Washington for “unlawfully obtaining and disclosing classified documents related to the national defense”. The Justice Department has stated that the journalist will face 18 charges which carry a maximum sentence of 175 years in prison. As part of Mr. Assange’s journalist work he has uncovered many government scandals. A movement has been put together against Assange’s extradition on the grounds that journalism is on trial. UNN’s Oliver Down will be present in London on Saturday at the march against Mr. Assange’s extradition and will be bringing you all the coverage that we fully expect the MSM to be ignoring.
