There is widespread disgust at the Prime Minister’s lame excuse regarding his presence, along with about 40 other people, at a party in the garden at Downing Street when the rest of us were cooped up under lockdown restrictions. And not for the first time. Downing Street seems to have been more akin to an entertainment centre than a serious office of government. Let us be clear, there is absolutely no doubt that this latest gathering was a social and not a work event. He, and all who attended, knew that in advance, they knew it when they were there, and they all know it now. Thankfully, this must be the end for the mop-haired muppet and let’s hope he takes a few with him although I don’t hold out much hope for anyone sensible replacing him.
But where are the lockdown fanatics now? The voices raised in anger are mainly those who have been expressing concerns about lockdown from the start. People like us who knew that the guidance was flawed and damaging at the time and who take the frequent and illegal partying at Downing Street as vindication. If our political masters were rubbing shoulders in large numbers over lockdown, the risks related to Covid-19 simply cannot have been that great and the lockdown measures had nothing to do with pandemic control. But remember how we were treated at the time? We were socially shunned, blocked and pilloried. We were called ‘Covid deniers’, ‘Granny killers’, ‘nutters’ and ‘flat earthers’.
Despite the fact that they must be feeling pretty stupid now, the unquestioning acceptance of lockdown and social distancing by our detractors has not prompted them to offer apologies to us. Nor has it prompted a rash of mea culpa tweets and articles. My dwindling circle of friends—decimated because of my Covid scepticism—has not grown this week and I strongly suspect that this is the same for all of us. Perhaps I ought to be more generous towards the Covid orthodox but some on the Covid sceptic side have been hounded from their jobs. I was mobbed once on Twitter at the behest of the Chief Executive of my local city council which was not a pleasant experience and within my profession (nursing) I am now a pariah. So, I speak from experience.
The current silence of the lockdown fanatics tells all we need to know about them. Mainly, but not exclusively, of the ‘woke left’ and the chattering classes generally they maintain their position in the face of evidence to the contrary. Frustration at having their beliefs undermined by evidence simply leads them to transfer those beliefs within their existing framework and reference points. Thus, for example, wearing masks—for which no credible evidence exists—becomes less a measure to control the pandemic and more a symbol of ‘solidarity’ with those suffering from Covid-19. The same thinking suggests we should all be having chemotherapy in solidarity with cancer sufferers. But logic is futile, and facts are inevitably outweighed by self-righteousness.
So, while we wait for Boris to spell ‘resignation’ and he hides under the pretext that someone in his family has Covid-19 (too late for the caution Boris) we can only speculate what the future holds for the whole raft of Covid measures in England. The case for lockdown has collapsed, the evidence for masks never existed and there are rumblings from the WHO and the EU that perpetual booster vaccinations are not such a good idea. Surely, the end is in sight.
