Petition to trigger Article 16 of Northern Ireland Protocol rapidly gains widespread support

The Northern Ireland Protocol is coming under increasing fire from all sides of the Brexit debate. These developments were cited as a “coming together of unionism” in recent days by Arlene Foster. Earlier this week, the DUP published a five-point plan aimed at scrapping the NI part of the Brexit deal.

In addition to this, ‘Mr Brexit’, Nigel Farage has backed the DUP’s plans. He took to Twitter to say: “All Brexiteers who believe in the United Kingdom should sign the DUP Petition”. He also tweeted the link to the petition which is below.

The prominent Brexiteer Kate Hoey also linked the petition to her Twitter followers with the caption “If you care about The UNITED Kingdom please sign Northern Ireland has been abandoned to the EU single market and EU Court”.

The Northern Ireland protocol was designed amid a desire to stop any hard border between NI and the Republic of Ireland. Speaking today, Arlene Foster has stated her “disappointment” that the EU had not acknowledged the protocol was causing disruption to trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Mrs Foster has requested that action be taken by the British government to overturn the current protocol arrangements. She said: “Part of the difficulty in unionism is that sometimes when confronted with difficult circumstances they turn in on themselves and start to look for lundys [traitors] they can blame for that,” she added. But since the actions of the EU last Friday, I have seen a coming together of unionism. My plea is not to turn in on ourselves”.
