Reports have emerged this morning that are stating that Boris Johnson is to push to reduce social distancing from two metres, which is the current level, to one metre as part of plans to accelerate the reopening of the economy.
Mr Johnson is understood to be keen to slash the social distance as soon as the science shows it is safe to do so. A group of six senior cabinet ministers, have been labelled ‘Save Summer Six’ and are thought to be attempting to work out how to get the UK back to something that resembles normal life by July.
The early findings of the group are that the social distancing rule is the key to restarting the economy and that for the period that the two-metre rules remain in place many businesses will be unable to reopen at nothing above 20% of capacity.
The Mail are this morning reporting that the Business Secretary Alok Sharma is set to speak to his counterparts in other European nations to see how they moved to one metre of social distance, which is currently the minimum distance recommended by the World Health Organisation.
UNN’s Oliver Down understands that the PM convened a meeting with the Chancellor Rishi Sunak on Friday to begin communication with Rishi Sunak to quicken the easing of lockdown. One unnamed Cabinet source said that the PM wants the country to be “back to normal or as near as possible to it by the summer”.
The Prime Minister is expected in the coming weeks to undertake a set-piece speech to set out his plans to rebuild Britain and the British economy following the coronavirus pandemic.
