Police have said they will not investigate Matt Hancock and his aide for their rule-breaking kiss outside the Health Secretary’s office.
The Metropolitan Police said their extra-marital embrace ‘remains a matter for the relevant government department’ because officers are focusing on ‘live’ incidents.
It comes as senior Tories fear the issue could undermine efforts to contain Covid-19 by reinforcing an ‘us and them’ mentality already felt among the public.
CCTV footage shows the pair appearing to cheat on their partners with a covert kiss in the corridor of Hancock’s ninth-floor office in Whitehall.
Mrs Coladangelo, who are both married to separate partners with whom they each have three children, may avoid a financial penalty as the Met said it won’t investigate ‘Covid-related issues retrospectively’.
A spokesperson said the force was ‘aware of the distribution of images alleged to have been obtained within an official government premises’.
It added: ‘No criminal investigation has been launched.
‘At this time this remains a matter for the relevant government department.’
On whether Mr Hancock could be investigated, the spokesperson said: ‘Where the Met receives allegations of breaches of the Health Protection Regulations 2020, we will focus on those that are live, or where police action can enable a change to behaviour that is posing a current public health risk.
‘As a matter of course the Metropolitan Police Service is not investigating Covid-related issues retrospectively.’
