UNN promises to keep you up to date with the very best and most independent coverage of the trade talks being held with the European Union. To this end, UNN’s Oliver Down has learnt that trust has been evaporating away between the UK and the EU as these talks are developing.
One senior EU figure, the European Parliament vice president Katarina Barley has she is becoming ever more “pessimistic” about the talks. Ms Barley has cited slow progress and has blamed the EU for its hard-line stance.
As the next round of talks are about to begin, and the UK opened its trade talks with the US last week, Ms Barley has said: “There is now a lot of mistrust. The British, for example, are not adhering to this transitional agreement. The negotiations did not move forward. While the EU wanted a big deal, the British wanted a lot of small ones.
The German MEP has pulled no punches when she said: “You cannot have access to the single market and at the same time undercut European standards when it comes to occupational safety, consumer protection, environmental protection, and thus gain an advantage. It will not work under any circumstances.”
Whilst speaking about the British PM, Ms Barley said, “Boris Johnson has already shown that he is capable of twists and turns”. Given, that the government are still standing strong on not extending the transition period beyond the year, a WTO regulated Brexit is looking ever more likely.
