Post-Brexit meetings between the United Kingdom and European Union will press ahead as planned next week, despite many European nations being on complete lockdown the meetings will take place via video link.
Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Michael Gove will meet with European Union officials next week via video link.
The UK and EU’s chief negotiators, David Frost and Michel Barnier are both in self-isolation after testing positive for coronavirus.
Despite this, Downing Street has insisted there would be “no change” to its timetable for getting a post-Brexit trade deal done with the bloc.
Under the terms of its withdrawal agreement with the EU, the UK has until the end of the year to negotiate a deal with the EU, during this time referred to as the ‘transition period’ Britain will continue to follow most Brussels rules.
British officials have completely ruled out any extension to this transition period, however, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned it will be “impossible” to reach a comprehensive deal within that timescale.
Speaking last month, Mr Gove threatened that the UK could walk away from talks in June if the two sides had not agreed the “broad outline” of terms by then.
The government has published a 30-page document outlining its priorities for the negotiation, with the first meeting of the UK-EU committee to discuss the implementation of the withdrawal agreement due to take place by video conference on Monday.
A spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the talks would “oversee the implementation, application and interpretation of the withdrawal agreement and will seek to resolve any issues that may arise from it”.
The Prime Minister himself announced to the nation that he had contracted coronavirus but was continuing to work in self-isolation from Downing Street, with official papers being left for the PM outside his door he continues to engage with the EU and other governments around the world.
