AS a remain alliance is confirmed reports are emerging that Nigel Farage is set to extending an olive branch to individual Brexiter Conservatives in a promise to stand down Brexit Party candidates as a means of securing a Brexit government. Mr Farage’s offer to Boris Johnson looks all but dead and this seems to have resulted in a change of tact. When speaking with The Telegraph Mr Farage stated he is “open” to such a move. However, the caveat to this is that the candidate would have to promise to reject Mr Johnson’s withdrawal bill.
Mr Brexit is still apoplectic about this withdrawal agreement. Mr Farage stated yesterday: “is not Brexit. It is a sell-out.” When quizzed further on a potential pact with no-deal Tories Mr Farage said “I would look forward to speaking to them. My track record… is that I have done deals with Labour and Conservatives in the past and I am open for the right people to do the same again. I am not going to put the interests of the party above the interests of the cause,”. Many Brexiteer’s are likely to be supportive of such an agreement as it will prevent the splitting of the leave vote.
A further source for the Telegraph, who claims to be friends with Mr Farage has stated that on a local basis “We are having those conversations”. Polling conducted in many constituencies are showing a split in the leave vote. However, only yesterday a YouGov poll showed a four per cent increase in support for the Brexit Party, putting Farage’s party in fourth place at 11 per cent with a fall in support for other parties.
UNN’s Oliver Down made contact with Dawn Westcott the Brexit party candidate for North Devon who told UNN exclusively that in North Devon “There is no Conservative candidate. If they stand one in North Devon against me, then they will risk splitting the leave vote. I’ve made that quite clear to them”. These comments would seemingly support the claim that local level conversations are being had.
