The US President Donald Trump has become infamous for his work on Twitter. Mr Trump has most recently used the platform to criticise popular social media platforms and has stated they are run and controlled by ‘the radical left.’
Trump released his Tweet on Saturday morning accompanied by a video. Mr Trump captioned the video with the statement “The Radical Left is in total command & control of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Google. The Administration is working to remedy this illegal situation. Stay tuned, and send names & events”.
Mr Trump’s tweet was released after the news that federal and state regulators in the U.S. are set to file antitrust lawsuits which allege that Google has abused its dominance of online search and advertising to stifle competition and boost its profits.
Mr Trump has regularly taken aim at Twitter, Facebook and Google, whilst accusing them of political bias against conservatives voices. As part of its $5 billion settlement following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook has created a ‘privacy committee’ as part of its board of directors.
Some critics have accused Mark Zuckerberg of failing to assemble a politically balanced on this committee because so few of its members have any conservative background. One of the appointees is Denmark’s first female prime minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt. Another appointee is Alan Rusbridger who is the former editor of the left-leaning Guardian newspaper, who also claimed Donald Trump’s White House press conferences claiming the President was ‘spreading disinformation’.
This board will eventually be is expanded to 40 members. Five of the members are from the US and 15 will be from around the world including at least two with strong links to Britain.
