The Prime Minister is coming under increasing pressure, from within his own party, to lift coronavirus restrictions. Those piling the pressure on are telling him that the numbers don’t justify keeping Britain closed until July, as has been rumoured.
Yesterday, Boris Johnson stated he was going to use ‘data not dates’ to come to a decision on when and how he will end the measures in place to control the spread of coronavirus. Experts are now arguing that this approach should see an earlier rather than protracted end to lockdown. Mark Woolhouse who is an expert in infectious disease at Edinburgh University told MPs yesterday that ‘if you’re driven by the data and not by dates, right now, you should be looking at earlier unlocking’.
Steve Baker has used the professor’s comments to argue for an acceleration of the Prime Minister’s plans. He said: ‘Boris Johnson today rightly confirmed he will focus on ‘data, not dates’ for easing restrictions as our recent letter suggested. As Professor Woolhouse, a senior government scientific adviser, says, the data are looking so good that Britain may open earlier’.
UNN’s Oliver Down understands that today the Prime Minister will today receive a dossier of data which will help significantly shape the roadmap out of lockdown. Those contents of the dossier will then likely be debated in meetings with aides and Cabinet ministers over the weekend prior to it being checked over by the full Cabinet on Monday morning before being presented to MPs ahead of an almost certain address the nation on Monday evening.
