Finally, Prime Minister Boris Johnson looks set to get his wish of a general election at the 4th attempt this evening. The early reaction from the Conservative side is one of relief. However, some are warning of such feelings lingering on for too long. Boris Johnson currently only has 288 MP’s following the Conservative party expulsion of 21 Brexit rebels as well as a number of resignations. Mr Johnson’s Conservative party will be off to the polls off the back of his failure to deliver on the October the 31st repeated pledge.
A further caveat for the Conservative party is the threat from Nigel Farage’s Brexit party. Having repeatedly refused Mr Farage’s suggested non-aggression pact a grave danger is present in a split of the Brexit vote which may deliver anti-Brexit candidates into a newly formed House of Commons. However, an extension of this is that the issue of Brexit is likely to provide opportunities for the Conservative party to win in seats never previously thought possible.
A winter general election provides unique challenges for a Conservative party who’s soft underbelly in often the NHS. The NHS typically comes under more pressure during the winter period and a key factor in the election may be the Labour party’s ability to apply pressure on this issue. An issue which may play a role in the upcoming general election may be a potential voter apathy in the backdrop of Brexit not being delivered and an unwillingness to come out and vote again, in the 3rd general election in 4 years.
However, Boris Johnson has previously been an election-winning machine. He won in London when deemed impossible in a Labour-dominated City. The Conservative plan will be to put forward a forward-thinking and positive vision for Britain, in stark contrast to the abhorrent effort in 2017.
