Activists have been chanting “Get lost!” and “Merkel must go!” as the beleagured Chancellor flew into the eastern city of Dresden for talks with regional members of her Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

Polls have shown that a majority of Germans blame an influx of migrants for an increase in street crime and sexual assaults against women and the crowd which gathered to meet her at Dresden held up banners including one reading: “Girls die, Mrs Merkel”.

Merkel, however, still maintains that the decision to let in over 1 million people was the right one despite struggling to deport criminals:

“I made clear that we have a situation now where not all problems have been solved, especially deportations are still a big problem.

The federal government will assume more responsibility here, especially by helping to procure the needed documents.”

Local councils say they often struggle to deport rejected asylum seekers because they do not have  passports and the fact that their countries of origin do not normally grant them any documents.

Support for Angela Merkel’s coalition Government has dropped to just 29 per cent, down from 33 per cent in last September’s election. She won a historic fourth term in office in last year’s elections but struggled to put a coalition government together and has since seen power move away from her due to fractures within the coalition on her immigration policies. Germany has also seen unprecedented numbers of terror attacks in recent years which was previously alien to them.
