BBC drama about the paedophile Jimmy Savile starring Steve Coogan has been heavily criticised, with many people calling out the ‘hypocrisy’ of the broadcaster.
This weekend, it was announced that Coogan, 55, would be playing the disgraced TV presenter in a drama called The Reckoning, exploring how Savile was able to commit atrocious abuse without facing any consequences for decades.
The BBC said that the team creating the drama are ‘working closely with many people whose lives were impacted by Savile to ensure their stories are told with sensitivity and respect’, a number of social media users have lambasted the need for the series.
Many also called out the fact that the drama is being made by the BBC considering Savile’s past with the broadcaster, with one critic stating: “The BBC, which enabled and covered for Jimmy Savile, is going to stick two fingers up at his victims and sensationalise his life.”

“So let me just get this straight… the BBC spent decades profiting off, platforming & protecting Savile through his life with no regard for his victims to now make a TV series to profit off and revive is memory with no regard for his victims? Will they cover their complicitness?” one person said.
“Could go my whole life without seeing a drama series on this. Given the Savile victims were vulnerable children & I have no doubt this still affects them now also probably many who didn’t speak out, who needs to see this misery,” another person remarked.
