If you delve back into the UNN archives you’ll find a stream where a great gentleman called Michael Shakespeare was interviewed on his experiences of dealing with the BBC and their hired enforcement lackeys Capita. His story and others like it show the ceaseless cynicism and bullying nature of the BBC, but he was not cowed by the bullies, he fought back and won.
Just for some background, I have been involved with TVlicenceresistance.info for many years now, and these people are quite literally experts on all aspects of the BBC’s methods and can offer you some very accurate and dependable advice on this issue.
The thing is that decoupling from the BBC and ceasing to pay the licence fee is really one of the most simple and easy processes you could possibly enact. The only reason people think it’s difficult is that the BBC want you to be afraid of them – and fear is the only thing they have to control you.
The first thing to get clear is that there is no such thing as a TV detector van, they were a psychological operation, an outright lie and they don’t exist. The BBC have precisely zero capability of detecting what you are doing in your own home unless you open your curtains and allow people to peer in from the pavement. This also applies to streaming services of all kinds, the BBC has no power and no capability to monitor what you download or stream online.
The only information the BBC can glean from you is what you choose to give them, and that should be NONE WHATSOEVER in all circumstances.
If you have a TV licence and wish to cancel it, you can do so in writing simply stating that you do not consume live TV or Iplayer and therefore have no need to pay. After that you can cancel any direct debit or simply cease paying.
Of course from the BBC’s perspective you are now branded a liar, in their eyes everyone is watching their drivel and anyone who states otherwise is lying – they won’t admit it but that’s exactly what they think and it forms the basis of their future relationship with you.
You will be sent letters on a monthly basis, they will make all sorts of threats, they will tell you about fines and ‘statements being taken under PACE’ and a hundred other terms designed to make you feel that you need to comply.
The fact is that these letters are simply computer generated, even the person’s signature on the letter is fake, those people do not exist. Everything about the BBC enforcement process is an empty threat with nothing to back it up. Throw these letters away unopened, they are junk mail.
You have no obligation to give the BBC any information whatsoever – nothing, not one word, not one click on a screen, not a gesture, not a sign of any kind. They will claim you need to inform the BBC that you don’t need a licence by completing their form – not true, give these people no information – ever.
When tvlicenseresistance receive a request for help on their forum the most common opening line from the enquirer is usually ‘the man said I just needed to sign the form to show he’d been at the address’ – and here people fall for probably the most evil and underhanded trick that the BBC play.
What the householder has done is sign the TVL178 form which if you read it carefully (which people don’t) is essentially a confession that you’re watching TV without a licence. The nasty little men who they send to your doorstep are paid by the number of forms they get signed so they will use a range of deceptions and lies to try and strike up a conversation with them to extract information from you.
The Daily Mail set up a sting operation where they sent in a mole to probe this exact process and if you type in the search term ‘Daily mail TV licence’ into YouTube you’ll find all the evidence you need to prove that this is a dirty underhand scam brought to you by the supposed benevolent hand of ‘Aunty Beeb’.
The good news is that these door to door busybodies are very easy to spot and even easier to deal with. Normally all doorstep callers wear an ID lanyard, this goes for NHS, Gas, Delivery drivers and all the other people who make house calls. The Capita goons do not wear any obvious external ID, most carry a large leather document wallet with their forms in and a mobile PDA. This alone should make it clear who you have on your doorstep.
If you get an unexpected knock on the door and a man asks you ‘Are you Mr XXXX’ – what would be your response? If he names you do you instantly say yes, that’s me….? – Well don’t – these people are not your friends.
These BBC people always open the dialogue with a question, you’ll notice they never introduce themselves beforehand, this is another tell tale sign you’re dealing with a BBC scavenger.
I’ll set out below the last conversation I had with one of these people, it’s an example of how you SHOULD approach the interaction. It’s not perfect but it’s effective.
BBC> ‘Hello are you Mr XXXXX?’
ME> ‘Who are you and what is your business?’
BBC> ‘I need to confirm if you are Mr XXXXX’
ME> ‘State your name and your business on my property or leave immediately’
BBC> ‘I am from TV licensing’
DOOR SLAMS SHUT.
Some might say I was being rude, but I was never nasty, just direct. The fact was I knew precisely who he was the moment he got out of his car but I always want to explore how these people operate. You will notice that they are always asking questions but are reticent of giving you any ID up front, this is a BBC tactic – they want to probe you for whatever information they can before they reveal what they want.
The fact is as long as you keep your interactions with the BBC to this level, you will NEVER face any action whatsoever – at tvlicenceresistance we have a motto – SAY NOTHING, SIGN NOTHING, CLOSE THE DOOR.
These people will always try and prolong the interaction, they are trained to deal with angry or irate people and use this to gain more information. Do not rise to their bait, simply shut the door. Do not be tempted to berate or threaten these people – they are not worth the effort, simply be happy in the knowledge that the £20 he thought he was going to make by stitching you up with a prosecution will never be earned.
You can see hours of video if you look for ‘Tv licence goon’ on YouTube, you will be able to see the nasty, cynical and predatory nature of these BBC bottom feeders. Do not be tempted to argue points of law on the doorstep, always just slam the door in their faces – it really is that simple.
I hope I have managed to demystify this process somewhat and that all you have to fear from the BBC is fear itself, they are powerless to enter your home or demand information. Just cut them out of your life forever – you’ll be better off for it.
If you want help or advice over and above what is here please go to tvlicenceresistance.info and there are people there who will help but please remember, the BBC are not there to be your friend, they want your money and they’ll do some pretty underhand things to get it.
Say nothing
Sign nothing
Close the door.
