A row has erupted and a Labour MP has resigned from the front bench following a breach of lockdown rules. Rosie Duffield, the MP for Canterbury has apologised for breaking lockdown rules with her new married lover.
Rosie Duffield has admitted meeting the married TV director James Routh before he moved in with her. Ms Duffield has also resigned as the Labour party Whip in the Commons. It has been revealed that Ms Duffield met Mr Routh for a five-hour walk in April, against lockdown rules, as well as allowing him to visit her constituency home when he was still living with his wife at another address.
Ms Duffield who is 48 has released a statement that said she and her new partner had been trying to “navigate a difficult personal situation as responsibly as possible” as well as saying : “I apologise that during that process we breached the guidelines”.
It is understood that privately Labour MP’s have praised Ms Duffield for quickly apologising, but this episode seems to be highly embarrassing for the Labour party leader who only last week slammed the Prime Minister and his aide Dominic Cummings over his lockdown trip to Durham. Sir Keir Starmer stated he would have sacked Mr Cummings if he was in the Prime Ministers position. Currently Sir Kier has not offered any comment on Ms Duffield’s conduct.
Since that walk in April Ms Duffield has now moved Mr Routh into her taxpayer-funded flat in London flat. In addition to this Mr Routh confirmed that he has separated from his wife.
