The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has today called for face coverings to be made mandatory in outside spaces. Khan feels that the virus could be spreading by people queuing outdoors together. Coronavirus case numbers in the capital are falling but the London mayor says he still won’t take his dog out for walks in the park because there are too many people frequenting them.
There are a number of positive signs. Official government figures state that 7,332 patients are currently staying overnight in London hospitals, a reduction of 250 from yesterday. Mayor Khan appeared on James’s O’Brien’s LBC show this morning, where he said: ‘More than 12,000 Londoners have now lost their life because of this awful pandemic’.
Mayor Khan, who is due to content the London Mayoral elections in May has said that if people were going to be ‘cheek by jowl’ in public then they needed to wear face coverings, even if they are outside. Figures by Tom Tom have shown that congestion in London has more than doubled from the Spring 2020 lockdown from 10 per cent in April 2020 to 22 per cent currently.
It is currently unclear if Mayor Khan has the powers to mandate face coverings in public in London and UNN’s Oliver Down will bring you more on this as we get it.
