Sadiq Khan calls for greater lockdown restrictions in London

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has told Boris Johnson that the capital needs new coronavirus restrictions as soon as possible to curb the spread of Covid-19.

He is also urging people to work from home if possible, despite the government’s attempts to get people back to their offices.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said in connection with this: “I’ve had discussions this week with the Mayor of London and the teams are meeting today to discuss further what might be needed.”

A Mayoral source also said: “It’s clear that cases in London are only moving in one direction, we are now just days behind hotspots in the North West and North East.

We can’t afford more delay. Introducing new measures now will help slow the spread of the virus and potentially prevent the need for a fuller lockdown like we saw in March, which could seriously damage the economy once again.”

Khan and city officials are reportedly worried about the rapidly changing situation in the city.

On Friday, Sadiq Khan said he held an emergency meeting with London council leaders, the Government and Public Health England to discuss the next steps saying:

“It is increasingly likely that, in London, additional measures will soon be required to slow the spread of the virus.

The Prime Minister has said that we are now seeing the start of a second wave of Covid-19 across the UK.

Londoners should also know that I am extremely concerned by the latest evidence I’ve been seen today from public health experts about the accelerating speed at which Covid-19 is now spreading here in London.

This is made worse by the uncertainty caused by the lack of testing capacity in the capital.”
