Sadiq Khan has been widely criticised for going on a mini- break with his wife to Morocco whilst London is gripped by a knife crime epidemic.
Khan is not the only one regarded as responsible for this as both Theresa May and Sajid Javid face intense criticism over Police budget cuts as well as politically correct Policing.
Two 17-year-olds teenagers were murdered over the weekend – Jodie Chesney in East London, and Yousef Ghaleb Makki in Greater Manchester. So far 20 murders have been carried out in London since the start of the year.
On LBC today Health Secretary Matthew Hancock said: “I’m pretty surprised. There are moments of crisis where if you’re in a big job with heavy responsibilities you need to be there and acting.
I think there’s an awful lot that Sadiq Khan needs to be doing on knife crime here in London to keep people safe.”
Susan Hall, a Tory member of the London Assembly, told The Sun Newspaper: “It is deeply shocking but hardly surprising that the Mayor has jetted off on holiday at a time when London’s crime epidemic rages on. This really does sum up Sadiq Khan’s complacent attitude towards spiralling violent crime rates in our city.”
Meanwhile a spokesperson forKhan said he would be back at his desk tomorrow. “Sadiq is on a short break with his wife and is in touch with Met Police Commissioner and City Hall at all times.”
Former Met commissioner Lord Hogan-Howe today gave the thumbs up to Khan’s decision to go on holiday.
“I’m sure he [had the] holiday planned. I would never criticise anybody for taking a break. You need them with these big jobs. Otherwise you are less effective.”
