Those using the NHS Covid pass app will soon need to have a booster jab as well as their original two vaccine doses for their NHS Covid pass to remain valid, Sajid Javid announced today.
The Health Secretary told the Commons that the change would come in ‘once all adults have had a reasonable chance to get their booster jab’.
People will still be able to show proof of a recent negative coronavirus test instead of vaccine status to enter large events.
It is understood the change is likely to take place in early 2022.
Mr Javid said: ‘From Wednesday, subject to this House, you’ll need to show a negative lateral flow test to get into nightclubs and large events, with an exemption for the double vaccinated.’
Richard Graham MP said there was ‘no reason for anyone’ to ask MPs to vote against a ‘vaccine passport’, Mr Javid claimed: ‘This House is not being presented with a vaccine passport.
‘That is not on the table, it’s not in any regulations. I don’t even know where that particular idea has come from.’
He added: ‘The Government has been absolutely clear about when it talks about access to nightclubs or to very large gatherings … that the requirement is to take a free lateral flow test and make sure it’s negative.
‘And if you don’t want to do that then you can prove your vaccine status. It’s up to that individual. That’s not a vaccine passport and the sooner we get rid of this misleading description of what the Government is proposing, the better.’
