So just what is the regime in Ukraine that the UK is supporting and funding?

James De Burghe Sept 2024

The UK government has, and still, is giving military and financial support to Ukraine, it has been ongoing since 2014.This support has cost the UK taxpayer billions of pounds, the exact sum is a secret but it is not less than 10 billion pounds. It has also cost the lives of a small number of UK service personnel sent out to give ‘advice’ to the Ukrainian army.

In the light of the 20 billion pound hole in the UK finances and the promise of an austerity budget that will adversely affect the elderly, disabled, unemployed, and poor it is not unreasonable to challenge the ongoing and very expensive support given by the UK to Ukraine.

There are those who will challenge the following as pro-Russian propaganda, yet every fact laid out below is verified by statements made either by the Ukraine Government, The United Nations, Statements made before Congressional committees in the United states. And news media produced in the UK, USA and other western NATO members.

NATO claims that it is supporting Ukraine to uphold democracy and to protect Ukraine from unprovoked aggression from the Russian Federation resulting from the Russian military intervention in both the Lugansk Peoples Republic and the Donets Peoples Republic in February 2022. It is in response to that statement that the UK, as a NATO member supports Ukraine.

1) Is Ukraine a Democracy in any way that we would understand the word.

Under the presidencies of Poroshenko and Later Zelensky the following human rights were abolished in Ukraine Refer to the Ukrainian Parliaments records and open statements by both these men in western news media.

No Freedom of speech

No Freedom of association

No Freedom to join a trades Union, to strike or withhold labour in any way.

These three restrictions were introduced before the the current conflict took place.

The absolute right of an employer to demand extra working hours without extra payment

The loss of Freedom of worship , the most common religion in Ukraine has been banned.

The dissolution of trades unions and seizure of their funds

The dissolution of all privately owned news media and the seizure of their funds and other assets

The suspension of the right to trial

The enforcement of instant death penalties without any due process of law, suspicion is seen as sufficient grounds to execute people.

These restrictions were all put in place by presidential decrees issued by Zelensky.

2) The legitimacy of the Ukrainian Government.

The  American funded coup that replaced the legally elected government of the Ukraine with an ultra right wing group of neo-Nazi fanatics challenges the legitimacy of all acts carried out by the so called government of Ukraine from that time forwards. The destruction of the Ukraine constitution that guaranteed the rights of all the ethnic groups that made up Ukraine was replaced by a constitution which ranked ethnic groups from Russia and Hungary as second class citizens with reduced civil rights.

Indeed Zelensky himself is no longer, under the constitution, the legal president of the country as he used martial law to suspend all elections. In fact the actual quasi legal head of Ukraine at the present time is the speaker of the Ukraine parliament.

3). The declared internal policies of Ukraine that contradict all definitions of Democracy.

Poroshenko declared publicly that it was the policy of the Ukraine government to drive the ethnic Russian populations of southern Ukraine out of the country.

Budanov declared in 2016 that it would be necessary to kill all ethnic Russians, men women and children, who failed to leave Ukraine in order to secure the ‘purity’ of Ukrainian bloodlines.

Zelensky campaigned for the presidency on a promise to bring peace to Ukraine and reduce the animosity that divided the various ethnic groups in the country. Once elected he did just the opposite giving more power to the Neo-Nazi groups and recognising the armed Nazi groups as official organs of the state. He glorified with monuments statues and renamed roads the 150,000 Ukrainians who in the second world war fought alongside the German Waffen SS and took a very active part in the murder of over one million Poles, Jews, Roma and Russian civilians.

4) The actions of the Ukraine state that again contradict any definition of Democracy.

The burning to death of 48 people who opposed Ukraine’s new constitution in the Odessa trades Union building and the killing and wounding of 248 more civilians the same day in the city of Odesa.

The Torture and murder of a minimum of 3000 civilians in the city of Mariupol by Ukraine’s Neo nazi Azov regiment.

The shelling and destruction of villages in the Donbas region that killed a further 8000 civilians between 2015 and 2022.

The shelling of larger towns and cities in the Donbas region that killed a further 6000 civilians

The establishment of a concentration camp for ethnic Russians in the Mariupol Region

All of the above has been confirmed and reported upon both by UNHRC and the International Red Cross. Much of it was also witnessed and reported upon by independent Journalists from the UK, USA, France, Finland, India, Italy and Holland.

5) Corruption in Ukraine.

Ukraine had long been regarded as one of the most corrupt countries in the world. But the conflict with Russia allowed corruption to rise to new heights.

Weapons delivered from the US and EU countries were pillaged and sold on the black market, a fact confirmed by Interpol.

Funds for building defence works in the Kharkov region amounting to 400 million dollars was embezzled in their entirety by the government officers and military officers entrusted with them.

Food sold to the military to feed the army had its prices increased by several hundred percent and the excess profit was split between the military officers, the minister of defence and the contractors. This fraud accounted for almost 800 million dollars.  In almost every sphere of government huge levels of corruption have been uncovered.

Ukraine is technically bankrupt, it relies entirely of foreign cash loans and gifts to pay its army civil servants, pensioners etc. Yet in 2023 and 2024 it has led Europe in the sales of luxury cars, watches, jewellery and other luxury goods. Ukrainians have spent hundreds of millions buying expensive properties in France, Monaco and the USA. Zelensky himself in no exception to this huge flood of massive personal expenditure. He has purchased multi million luxury homes in France, Italy, Germany and the USA.

This then is the country that your taxes are subsidising, this is the country that has caused your energy prices to rise through the ceiling, this then is the reason that the UK has a huge 20 billion pound hole in its finances. This is why there is no money for the winter fuel allowance for the elderly or the NHS. This is why poverty rates are increasing in the UK
