Starling official figures have been released that show that the current suicide rate for men in England and Wales in 2019 was its highest level for two decades. Data released today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) found there were 5,691 suicides registered in England and Wales in 2019. This is at a rate of 11 deaths per 100,000 of the population.
The ONS figures also show that men accounted for about three-quarters of suicide deaths that were registered in 2019. Of the 5,691 recorded suicide deaths recorded 4,303 were men and 1,388 were women. This means that the England and Wales male suicide rate is currently 16.9 deaths per 100,000, which was the highest since 2000.
Men aged 45 to 49 had the highest age-specific suicide rate at 25.5 deaths per 100,000. , while the highest rate among women was for 50 to 54-year-olds, at 7.4 deaths per 100,000. London recorded the lowest rate with 11.8.
The ONS reasoned that that higher rates of suicide among middle-aged men might be because of economic hardship, isolation, and a more prevalent problem with alcoholism. This was coupled with an assertion that males in this category are less likely to seek help for mental health problems.
