Teacher banned from schools after his comments were deemed to be ‘Islamophobic’

A school teacher in Somerset has been banned from teaching as a result of a series of comments that were deemed to be ‘Islamophobic’ from a Facebook page being reported to the Department of Education. Philip Turner who is 53 and was a primary school teacher wrote on Facebook  “Islam is the cancer of the world. Cut it out!”.

In addition to these comments, online Mr Turner was alleged to have shared some of his “unacceptable” views in the classroom with classrooms of year 5 and 6 pupils.  When handing down the verdict the Department for Education stated that Mr Turner he had shown an “unacceptable lack of tolerance” shown by his series of “sustained offensive posts promoting racial and religious hatred”.

Prior to being sacked Mr Turner worked at the Mary Elton Primary School in Clevedon. This was until January 2019, although parents first raised concerns about his views the previous September. The investigation by the school discovered that Mr Turner described Islam as a “vile vile vile region” via Facebook as well as sharing an article which contained a picture of a several Asian men, with the comment: “More child rapists – wonder what they have in common?”

Mr Turner also discussed his political affiliations posting on Facebook “If I voted or endorsed a right-wing political party I would lose my job. UKIP is as far as I can go and that would be pushing it for some liberal loonies.” As a result of this, the Department for Education has banned Mr Turner from teaching indefinitely. He cannot teach in any school, sixth form college, youth accommodation or children’s home in England. Mr Turner did not admit to any of the school’s allegations and did not participate in his professional conduct hearing. Mr Turner has the right to appeal the prohibition order to the High Court, although UNN is unsure if Mr Turner will take up this opportunity.
